About This Experience

Warsaw — Part I: Jewish Life Before the War

Before the Second World War, Warsaw was home to roughly 375,000 Jews — nearly a third of the city's population and the largest Jewish community in Europe. Its streets held hundreds of synagogues and prayer houses, Yiddish and Hebrew newspapers, theatres, schools, sports clubs, and political and cultural movements of every kind.

This experience takes you into that world: the neighbourhoods of Nalewki and Muranów, the markets and courtyards, the scholars and merchants, the artists and families whose lives made up one of the great centres of Jewish civilization.

Part I of the Warsaw series, this experience is a foundation for understanding what was lost — a portrait of a community in its full richness, as it lived before 1939.
